ST. LOUIS -- Schnucks has installed checkpoints offering instant hand-sanitizing wipes to customers at shopping-cart corrals at store entrances and meat counters, the company said. While the wipes are formulated to be used on hands, they can be used to clean shopping-cart handles, too. Store officials said they have received many positive comments from consumers since the checkpoints were installed. The company's food safety department spent more than a year testing the program. In addition to providing customers with the new service, the program is appealing because it reinforces the message that food safety is everyone's responsibility, officials said. To support the initiative, baggers at Schnucks are being trained on ways to prevent cross contamination inside shopping bags, the company said.
