As consumers grow more aware of what they buy, it pays for retailers to know more about what they sell. When it comes to seafood and ecologically sustainable fishing practices, "Sourcing Seafood" might be the answer. The new directory of ocean-friendly suppliers has been published by The Seafood Choices Alliance, an association of conservationists, restaurant owners and food retailers. Sourcing Seafood contains detailed species descriptions and buying tips for farmed and wild-caught fish, and a list of processors, direct-to-market fishermen and aquaculture operations considered to exemplify the best ecological practices.

Conservationists have begun expressing concern about the over-fishing of several species of fish, and many natural food retailers have responded through seafood department marketing programs like Whole Foods' "Fish for our Future."
