MAUMEE, Ohio -- Seaway Food Town here is testing noncorrosive produce display case mirrors at one store in a suburb of Toledo, Ohio.

Approximately 24 feet of mirrors were installed in the produce department. An average store has about 100 feet of produce cases.

"Department misters create a lot of moisture that tarnishes the metal and silver backs of mirrors," said Bernie Crouse, director of engineering at Seaway.

The mirrors, from Pilkington Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co., Toledo, have a reflective coating that does not use heavy metals, making them impervious to corrosion. Crouse said if the mirrors work, replacement costs, which could reach a few thousand dollars every five years, will be eliminated.
