ELIZABETH, N.J. -- Tapping into the burgeoning popularity of mushroom varieties, ShopRite stores in northern New Jersey ran a half-price mushroom promotion that filled a full-page newspaper advertisement.

. A Wakefern spokeswoman told SN it was too soon to comment on the success of the promotion.

The headline of the advertisement read, "Half-price mushroom madness!"

Varieties included sno white for 99 cents per 10-ounce package; portabellas for $1.99 a pound; a "gourmet blend" of cremini, shiitake, oyster and enoki was $1.84 for a 4-ounce package; buttons at 84 cents for an 8-ounce package; sliced portabellas at $1.34 for a 6-ounce package; and portabella caps for $1.49 for a 6-ounce package. Additionally, oyster, shiitake and cremini mushrooms were on special for $3.99 per pound.

The ad included suggestions for using the different varieties of mushrooms. For example, the ad said the sno white variety has "a mild flavor that intensifies when cooked. It's good in salads, for eating fresh, cooking, stir frying or serving with pasta."
