PARIS -- An international jury of food-retailing journalists has selected the winners of the SIAL D'Or 2000 Awards, which honor innovative, commercially successful products that have debuted around the world during the past two years.

uits and bread; fruits and vegetables; grocery products; nonalcoholic beverages; alcoholic beverages; and products for the catering sector. Products were judged on their commercial success, innovation and responsiveness to their markets.

The catering category was new for the SIAL D'Or 2000, the eighth biannual competition that began in 1986. SN, participating for the first time this year, nominated products from the U.S. market.

Canada, Denmark and Japan made the strongest showing, with products from those countries winning two category SIAL D'Or Awards each. Great Britain, Israel and Spain each won one category award. The nine category winners compete for the Global SIAL D'Or, with that single winner revealed at the trade show.

In addition to the category awards, a country SIAL D'Or was awarded to the product from each country receiving the highest point total from the jury. The country SIAL D'Or winner for the United States was the Milk-It Single Serve Squish Pak, from Country Fresh Dairy, Grand Rapids, Mich.

The winning products will be honored at an awards ceremony during this year's SIAL (Salon International de L'Alimentation) food and beverage trade show, to be held here Oct. 22 to 26. In addition, a special area on the trade show floor will be devoted to the winning products.
