OKLAHOMA CITY -- In an effort to improve front-end efficiencies for smaller retailers it services, Fleming Cos. here is offering a point-of-sale solution designed for stores with three or fewer checkout lanes.

Retailers can lease or purchase the POS system through Fleming, according to Patty Trosper, retailer technology services and point-of-sale specialist for the wholesaler.

The new POS system allows for faster checkouts and reduced cashier training time, and offers a wide range of management-reporting options, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The reports can be accessed at the store's back office or from a central headquarters location, and can include data on inventory management, labor scheduling and financial reporting. The POS system allows retailers to operate the register as a stand-alone terminal or as part of a cluster of terminals, the source added.

The new Windows NT-based POS system is "what most people are going to," said Trosper..

The system, from NCR, Dayton, Ohio, is being distributed to Fleming through Smyth Systems, Irvine, Calif., a subsidiary of Bristol Retail Solutions, Newport Beach, Calif.
