In the first 24 weeks of the year, sales rose 3.1% to $842 million, income jumped 351% to $3.8 million, and comparable-store sales increased 4.8%.

Smart & Final, which operates 219 stores and two food-service distribution companies, is rebounding from a loss of $8.7 million for fiscal 1998.
