SALT LAKE CITY -- Smith's Food & Drug Centers here said last week Al Rowland has resigned as president and chief operating officer.

No successor will be named at Smith's. The company's three senior vice presidents who formerly reported to him -- Abel Porter, Intermountain region; Jim Halsey, Southwest region; and Ken Martindale, sales and merchandising -- now report to Robert G. Miller, president and chief executive officer of Fred Meyer.
