PHOENIX -- Smitty's Super Valu here has begun accepting the American Express charge card, joining a small but growing group of retailers offering the payment option.

Marc Weidinger, vice president of marketing for Smitty's, said frequent consumer requests for the card were a main reason the retailer decided to accept American Express. Smitty's already accepts MasterCard, Visa and Discover cards.
"American Express is new for us," he said. "We had a large number of customers who were interested in us providing that service to them."
In addition to Smitty's, other supermarkets accepting American Express include Bruno's, Birmingham, Ala., and Ralphs Grocery Co., Compton, Calif.
