Wild Oats: Salted Classic Kettle-Cooked Potato Chips

t Wild Oats, described the retailer's new Salted Classic Kettle-Cooked Potato Chips as an everyday item with a specialty aspect. The chips were added to the retailer's kettle-cooked line earlier this year after about six months in development. They joined four other flavor variations, including Cheddar, Honey Barbecue, Salt and Vinegar, and Jalapeno.

The chips come in a variety of sizes, from a 1-ounce bag up to 5- and 12-ounce bags. Price can range between $1.25 and $1.69, depending on size. Different coloring and imagery help distinguish each of the chips from their companions, and the Salted Classic variety comes in a yellow bag with orange trim. The image of a streetcar is featured prominently in the center of the bag "to reflect classic America, but also promote a premium quality and value," Albert said. In keeping with Wild Oats' promise to consumers, the chips are made from all-natural ingredients and are free of hydrogenated oils.

The item can always be found in the snack food aisle at Wild Oats stores, but the chain occasionally features the chips on displays in the front of the store, too. They are promoted through in-store sampling and point-of-sale specials.

Costco: Kirkland Signature Rice Crackers with Nuts

Only the finest ingredients are used in Costco's Kirkland Signature Rice Crackers with Nuts, which the retailer refers to as a unique and high quality impulse snack item. Featuring roasted, extra-large, Virginia peanuts, roasted Non-Pareil Supreme almonds, sesame sticks and rice crackers that are specified to contain 100% glutinous rice with no added wheat, the mix is coated in a soy sauce and presented in a re-sealable stand-up pouch bag.

The product became a Kirkland Signature item in 1999, but was recently reformulated and relaunched at the club store. It complements two other Costco Kirkland Signature snack mixes, Trail Mix and Fruit & Nut Medley. A 3-pound bag ranges in price from $5.99 to $6.29, and the bag is designed to provide strength and act as an oxygen barrier, Costco executives told SN.

Normally merchandised with the other candy and snack mixes in the product run located in front of the registers, the item has enjoyed particular success in recent months due to the low-carb craze, which has bolstered sales of products containing nuts as a main ingredient.

The retailer does not expect to launch any other items featuring rice crackers in the future.
