DUARTE, Calif. -- Food stores in southern California are participating in a fund-raising drive for City of Hope, a national cancer institute and research center.

Some of the food stores participating in the fund-raising drive include Lucky Stores, Buena Park, Calif; Stater Bros. Markets, Colton, Calif.; Ralphs Grocery Co., Compton, Calif; Food 4 Less, La Habra, Calif; Hughes Family Markets, Irwindale, Calif.; Certified Grocers of California, Los Angeles; Vons, Arcadia, Calif.; and Albertsons, Boise, Idaho.

These stores are members of the southern California-based Food Industries Circle, which supports City of Hope's research and medical treatment. The Food Industries Circle is one of the largest industry support groups for City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute, which are dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, through research and patient care.

Six well-known industry leaders will spearhead the fund-raising campaign efforts of southern California's food industry volunteers, who last year raised $5.2 million for City of Hope.

Since its inception in 1973, the group has raised more than $43.2 million for research and treatment at City of Hope, based here.

The Food Industries Circle's fund-raising goal is $1.3 million this year, the spokesperson added. The Circle was founded 24 years ago.
