ASBURY PARK, N.J. -- The Union of Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1262 here was still waiting for an offer late last week from the supermarket chains that employ the workers, with the local's contract scheduled to expire over the weekend.

it down and have a specific discussion of our chief issues and get an offer soon," said Harvey Whille, president of UFCW Local 1262.

Among the chief issues is wages. Whille said wage increases at all levels are needed, especially for higher-level employees who have been taking on added responsibilities.

Whille also noted that the union is seeking increases in health and benefit packages, as well as pension increases and also a revised Sunday work clause.

Whille pointed out that while the unions regularly work out contracts with three-year terms, Local 1262 agreed to extend its current contract one year as a goodwill effort toward the retailers.

"They came to us last year, when their businesses were not doing so well, and we worked with them. We compromised. Now it's our turn," Whille said.

After seven general meetings around the area, Whille said he believes the general consensus of members will be to authorize a strike.

"We hope it doesn't come to that. But we're at a loss as to why there has been such silence," Whille added.

The retailers involved have expressed their belief that a new contract will be ironed out prior to Saturday's deadline.

"Negotiations are in progress. Both sides are meeting, and we are confident a successful settlement will be reached," said Mary Ellen Gowin, spokeswoman for the retailers.
