CHICAGO -- Defeat of proposed striker replacement legislation in the U.S. Senate is essential, Roger E. Stangeland, chairman and chief executive officer of Vons Cos., based in Arcadia, Calif., told an audience at the Food Marketing Institute Convention here.

"

Stangeland made his remarks during the presentation session, "The State of the Food Industry: Speaks '94."

According to Stangeland, George Mitchell, the Senate majority leader, "has promised labor leaders to bring the bill to the Senate floor by Memorial Day.

"It already passed the House last year, and President Clinton has said he will sign it," Stangeland said. "The only barrier to passage now is a significant Republican filibuster."

Stangeland urged members of the food industry to become more politically involved. "Government affairs can't be a spectator sport, participation in the process is essential," he said.
