Galen said the committee plans to contact the manufacturers whose cases were found to exceed the industry limits to see if they can rectify the problem.

According to a set of 1988 industry guidelines, manufacturers should target case weights at 45 pounds without exceeding 50 pounds, he said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also has cited cases weighing more than 50 pounds as hazardous to the health of workers who handle them, he said.
