SN contacted each company and reported direct numbers when available; ranges were given when exact numbers were not available. In some instances, numbers were based on analysts' and other observers' projections. These figures only represent the number of combined general merchandise-supermarket stores each company operates; all the companies listed except Meijer Inc. also operate retail stores with other formats. Store projections for Meijer and Fred Meyer Inc. in 1997 were not available.
