1942: Winston and Newell breaks from IGA, opens stores under Super Valu banner.

1944: Louis B. Newell, son of George R. Newell, named chairman.

1951: Winston and Newell goes public.

1954: Company changes name to Super Valu Stores.

1958: Thomas Harrison, great-grandson of Hugh G. Harrison, named chairman.

1965: Russ Byerly named chairman; Super Valu acquires Lewis Grocer Co., Indianola, Miss.

1969: Morris "Mo" Lewis of Lewis Grocer named Super Valu chairman.

1973: Jack Crocker named chairman, brings retail point of view to company.

1977: Super Valu gets FTC approval to make additional wholesale acquisitions.

1980: Super Valu acquires Cub Foods.

1982: Mike Wright named chairman.

1992: Company becomes Supervalu, acquires Wetterau.

1999: Supervalu acquires Richfood.

2001: Jeff Noddle becomes Supervalu chairman, opts out of Kmart supply deal.

2002: Supervalu acquires Deal$ - Nothing Under a Dollar.

2003: Supervalu swaps New England operations with C&S for Fleming's Midwest accounts.
