LOS ANGELES -- A former employee of 13-store independent K.V. Mart Co., Carson, Calif., and another man here have been convicted of solicitation to commit a burglary at the company's offices. The defendants are Gilberto Verdugo Gutierrez, who was terminated as a night-crew manager by K.V. Mart in February 1994, and Thomas Celso Castro -- described by a K.V. Mart attorney as an employee of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
The defendants have filed a notice of appeal with the Los Angeles Court of Appeals to reverse the convictions. James Varga, an attorney for the two men, declined comment on the circumstances of the case or the basis for an appeal.
