DALLAS -- Tom Thumb here expects to open at least five new food-and-drug combination stores in the Dallas area over the next two years.

Properties Inc., Houston, told SN. Randalls Properties and Tom Thumb are divisions of Randalls Food Markets, Houston.

Tom Thumb also has acquired property in three Dallas suburbs, Carrollton, Rowlett and DeSoto, and plans to develop combination stores on sites there. Carrollton and DeSoto units are expected to open next year; the Rowlett store probably will open in 1996, Rollins said.

Once all five stores are open, Tom Thumb will operate 56 supermarkets in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. All five new stores are in the 57,500-square-foot range.

Randalls acquired the Tom Thumb chain from Dallas-based Cullum Cos. in August 1992. The three new suburban supermarkets are located in shopping centers being developed by Randalls Properties, the real-estate division of Randalls Food Markets.
