SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. -- Trader Joe's Co. here said it hopes to open 15 new stores in its West Coast division this year, compared with two last year and 11 in 1997.

Trader Joe's operates 99 West Coast stores (77 in California, eight in Arizona, seven in Washington, four in Oregon and three in Nevada) and 21 East Coast locations, all of which have opened in the past two-and-a-half years (seven in Massachusetts, seven in New York, three in Connecticut, two in Virginia and one each in New Jersey and Maryland).
