WASHINGTON (FNS) -- U.S. tuna fish processors have warned consumers that some of their canned products may contain sulfites, chemicals that can trigger asthmatic attacks in certain people.

ssors Association and the U.S. Tuna Foundation said domestic fish processors do not use sulfites. But recently, they said in a joint statement, processors "received the ingredient from a supplier, which added sulfite agents in violation of industry specifications without their knowledge."

The canners said the affected tuna products could include most albacore, or white tuna, and limited amounts of light tuna. They said there have been "no adverse health effects reported to any of the U.S. tuna processors due to the presence of undeclared sulfites in canned tuna." They have asked consumers to call a toll-free telephone number, (800) 283-1112, with any questions.
