LANCASTER, Pa. -- Turkey Hill Dairy here hosted its 14th annual ice cream social last month to raise money for children's books and programs for the Library System of Lancaster County.

Marlene Weaver.

The ice cream maker also made a philanthropic debut in The Big Apple this summer, by participating in the Hudson River Festival's 8-week series of Sunday afternoon events in Battery Park in Manhattan. Proceeds go to WNYC, New York City's public radio station.

Turkey Hill gave away ice cream cones in four flavors, or a nonfat frozen yogurt, to attendees who gave donations at the events.

"We really wanted to do something like this: find a nonprofit organization that we could work with, and also increase Turkey Hill awareness," Weaver said. At the conclusion of the series the company presented a check to WNYC.

Gini Gold, spokeswoman for the station, said WNYC reaches a high-end market in terms of education and income, and its listeners have a high degree of awareness and activism.
