RICHMOND, Va. -- Ukrop's Super Markets here named Robert S. Ukrop to succeed James Ukrop, his older brother, as president.
is a new position at Ukrop's. Joseph Ukrop, their father, continues as chairman of the family-owned company.
Robert Ukrop's previous title was executive vice president and chief operating officer. He retains the chief operating officer position.
The title changes were expected, according to Scott Ukrop, director of marketing. Scott Ukrop is the son of James Ukrop.
"We've been planning this for a long time," Scott Ukrop said.
As president and chief operating officer, Robert Ukrop will continue overseeing the day-to-day operations of the 22-unit chain. James Ukrop will now be able to concentrate on long-range planning, the company said.
Robert worked his way up through the company since becoming manager of a store in 1972.
Ukrop's, which is a market leader in the Richmond market, is known for its innovative merchandising and a strong in-store food-service program.
