UWG SALES DECLINE, NET INCREASES IN 2ND QUARTER

LOS ANGELES -- Unified Western Grocers here said last week sales declined and net income turned positive for the second quarter and first half ended March 29.

and a reduction in sales of low-margin product.

Net income was $1 million for the quarter and $2.3 million for the half, compared with losses in the year-ago periods, due to increases in productivity and throughput at each of its five distribution centers, combined with a companywide reduction in expenses and closure of unprofitable subsidiaries, the company said.

The improved operations resulted in increased patronage dividends -- up 2% to $2.8 million for the quarter, and 20.4% to $6.8 million for the half.
