SN To Join Video Show Panel

Supermarket News will participate in a seminar at the East Coast Video Show, October 5-7, here. Titled, "Meet the Editors," the program will be part of the general business session, which runs from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Moderated by Josh Davidson, president of the public relations firm Davidson Communications, Tarrytown, N.Y., the program will include Dan Alaimo, video reporter for Supermarket News; Kevin Brass, executive editor of Video Store Magazine, Santa Ana, Calif.; Cindy Spielvogel, editor of Video Week, New York; and Paul Sweeting of Video Business, New York.

"The trade press is up-to-the-minute on what is going on in our industry, and retailers will have the opportunity to ask any one of these knowledgeable panelists what their views are and what they see as reality coming down the pike, as we go into the new millennium," said Kimbirly Orr, show manager of Home Video Entertainment Events, a joint venture between Advanstar Communications, Cleveland, and the Video Software Dealers Association, Encino, Calif.

'Private Ryan' Sees DVD Release

GLENDALE, Calif. -- DreamWorks Home Entertainment will release a DVD version of "Saving Private Ryan" on Nov. 2, the same day the Oscar-winning title will be re-priced from the VHS rental market. The release is significant because director Steven Spielberg has been reluctant to issue his films on DVD.

Among the features of the DVD release are a message from Spielberg, a half-hour behind-the-scenes featurette, original theatrical trailers, cast and crew biographies, production notes and interactive menus.

The suggested retail price of the DVD version, which pre-books on Sept. 27, was pending at press time, a DreamWorks official said. The VHS version pre-booked Aug. 30 with a suggested retail price of $24.99. "Saving Private Ryan" won Academy Awards for best director, best cinematography, best film editing, best sound and best sound-effects editing.
