Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh, and Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., continue to open new video rental departments, although Wegmans also closed one recently.

Giant Eagle opened an expanded Iggle Video department this month in its remodeled Camp Horne Road store in Pittsburgh. Among the grand opening festivities were a radio remote and celebrity appearances. Also this month, Giant Eagle opened its first Iggle Video department in the Cleveland area stores it obtained with the Riser Foods acquisition.

Wegmans opened a video department in its spacious new store on Alberta Drive in Amherst, N.Y., this month, but closed a small department, estimated at around 250 square feet, in its Amherst Street store in Buffalo. The department was replaced by a children's play area, SN found in a store visit. Store employees said the department wasn't performing well. The new department has over 4,000 tapes, employees estimated.

Warner Promotes DVD

With Microsoft Corp.

BURBANK, Calif. -- Warner Home Video here has joined with Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., to cross promote DVD and Windows 98 in November and December. Customers who purchase Windows 98 will receive a free Warner DVD movie from a selection of 10, including "L.A. Confidential," "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," "U.S. Marshals" and "City of Angels."

"It's the best of both worlds," said Tom Lesinski, senior vice president, worldwide marketing and development, for Warner.

"DVD represents the first true convergence product. The ability to watch movies on computer or television makes DVD the media of the millennium."
