SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Village Super Market here said it had lower sales for the third quarter and 39 weeks ended April 29.

eek quarter was $293,000, compared with a loss of $1.1 million a year ago. Sales declined 4.3% to $164.5 million during the quarter, with same-store sales down 1.3%.

For the 39 weeks, the company reported earnings of $227,000, compared with a loss of $558,000 a year ago. Sales fell 0.7% to $503.6 million for the year-to-date, while same-store sales dropped 1.1%.

The company attributed the sales declines to the closure of a store during the year, combined with the effect of new competitive entries, continued sluggishness in the economy and higher promotional spending a year ago.

It said the current year-to-date results are benefiting from an extra week, compared with 38 weeks a year ago.

It also said results for the quarter were "substantially better" than in the prior year, despite lower sales, due to lower payroll and promotional costs and increased gross margin percentages.
