LOS ANGELES -- Program plans are coming together for the 14th Video Software Dealers Association convention in Dallas, May 21 to 24, and a new interactive entertainment show that will be held a week and a half earlier. The theme for this year's VSDA show is "Blazing New Trails." VSDA will hold 16 seminars during the convention and they will begin on Saturday, May 20, the day before the official start of the show. Among the seminars announced so far for the VSDA show: "Home Video Economics: The Studio Perspective," put on by David Bishop, executive vice president of MGM/UA Home Entertainment, Santa Monica, Calif.; "Checkpoints on the Information Superhighway," with Bob Geistman, national sales director of Ingram Entertainment, La Vergne, Tenn.; "Buying New Releases: Maximize Your Profits," moderated by Bob Tollini, senior vice president of Major Video Concepts, Indianapolis, with speaker Wayne Bailey, president of Accurate Inventory Management, Aurora, Colo., and "Finding a Niche: Retail Marketing of Special Interest Programming," moderated by Paul Caravatt, president of the Special Interest Video Association, Norwalk, Conn. Other seminars include, "CD-ROM: A Hands-On Workshop," "Comparing Video Rental to Other Maturing Retail Businesses," "Consumer Panel: What Kids Look for in Video Games." Shortly before the VSDA convention, which is the biggest event of the year for the home video industry, a new show will debut for the interactive entertainment business. The Electronic Entertainment Expo, based in White Plains, N.Y., is also called the E3 show. It will be held May 11 to 13 in Los Angeles and focus on video games, compact disc read-only memory and entertainment-oriented computer software. E3 is in the time period usually occupied by the Summer Consumer Electronics Show, which will not be held this year. Three keynote speakers are scheduled for E3: Tom Kalinske, president and chief executive officer of Sega of America, Redwood City, Calif.; Howard Lincoln, chairman of Nintendo of America, Redmond, Wash., and Olaf Olafsson, president of Sony Electronic Publishing Co., Santa Monica, Calif. Among the 35 workshops scheduled for E3 are: "The Female Demographic: Untapped Riches or Impossible Market?" "Merchandising in the '90s: It's Not Just Posters Anymore."
