BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores here last week said food sales at its supercenter division increased 26% over year-ago levels for the fiscal year ended Jan. 30, with comparable-store food sales up in double digits for the fourth quarter and the high single digits for the year.

For the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, comp sales in the United States were up 4.1%, which included a 3.9% increase at the Wal-Mart Stores division and a 5.3% gain at Sam's Club.
The company reported a net income for the fourth quarter of $2.72 billion, up 8.5% over year-ago levels, which included income from discontinued operations. Sales were $74.5 billion, up 12.2%. For the year, Wal-Mart reported a net income of $9.1 billion, up 13.8%, on sales of $256.3 billion, up 11.6%.
"It was a good year, not a great year," said Scott, noting that the company's international division had an especially strong performance.
