BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Sales of Wal-Mart Stores here for both the third quarter and nine months ended Oct. 31 increased 12%, according to a filing last week with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Year-to-date in the United States, Wal-Mart opened 20 new discount stores, 17 supercenters and eight Sam's Clubs. The company also converted 75 discount stores to supercenters, relocated or expanded three discount stores and closed one unit.
At the end of the nine-month period, the company had 1,904 Wal-Mart stores, 436 supercenters and 444 Sam's Club units in the United States.
