CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. -- Waldbaum's, a division of Montvale, N.J.-based A&P here, is pleased with the results from its "summer chicken sale" promotion, according to Alan Utstein, director of deli for the 92-unit division.

" The promotion centered around an advertisement, which appeared in the division's circular. Utstein said it brought the sales results he was looking for, but he declined to detail what those results were.

Under the headline "Summer Chicken Sale," the ad copy read, "Flame Broiled Hot or Cold, $2.29 a pound." The broiled chicken's everyday price is $2.59 a pound.

Lemon pepper, mesquite, herb, honey, no salt added, and barbecue flavors are highlighted in the ad, which also informs customers that chickens will be quartered upon request. Fried chicken was also mentioned in the ad, at its regular price of $6.99 for eight pieces, Utstein said.

Flavors have given chicken sales a boost since their introduction more than a year ago. "Hardly anybody buys the plain one," Utstein said.
