"The idea is to share what's practical and see how we can leverage learning. Clearly there is a competitive element in this, so if the company feels that we have the edge on something, that may not be forthcoming. "But there are so many things that we all need to benefit from."

Efficient Consumer Response is a good example of that, he says, describing universal product codes and scannability as issues that are not just Pillsbury issues, but industry issues. "One of the things I'm looking forward to in this role is getting closer to my counterparts in the Food Marketing Institute," he says.

"We as manufacturers have to hear the concerns of the retailers."
