WENATCHEE, Wash. -- For the second year in a row, the Washington State Apple Commission, based here, is asking retailers to aid in the search for the "World's Greatest Granny," one of the commission's annual promotions.

s will be available to consumers at Granny Smith displays through April.

"If all programs worked as smoothly and were communicated as well as this one, everybody would be overjoyed," said Mike Genuardi, produce director at Genuardi's Family Markets, Norristown, Pa., in a statement. "All we had to do was hang the point of purchase and Washington apples took care of the rest. We were extremely pleased."

Each retailer will choose a top grandmother, and the winner and the person who nominated her will win a trip to the "Granny Finale," May 4, 1997 at the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival here.

"This promotion has done more for our staff, our customers and our produce image in the community than any other promotion we've seen for a number of years, and our sales reflect it," said Stewart Lang, produce marketing manager for the Calgary Co-op Association, Calgary, Alberta, according to a release.
