SUNBURY, Pa. -- Weis Markets here has agreed to post a National Labor Relations Board notice listing what a union trying to organize employees can and cannot legally do. Thomas Lazur, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 72, based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., said the posting is a victory for the union as it tries to organize 550 employees at Weis distribution facilities here and in Milton, Pa. Weis spokesman Dennis V. Curtin said the order to post the notice was part of an administrative agreement with the NLRB to avoid protracted litigation with UFCW Local 72. He said the agreement is not an admission of guilt.
Lazur said the NLRB had agreed with its contention that Weis had committed unfair labor practices by interfering with its efforts to talk with employees at the two facilities. But Curtin said the board refused to issue complaints on most of the union's charges after it found insufficient evidence that Weis had violated the law. The NLRB's action, Lazur said, clears the way for more intensified organizing efforts by the union.
