SUNBURY, Pa. -- Weis Markets here reported increased sales and earnings for the third quarter and 39 weeks ended Sept. 24.
increased 6.3% to $377.2 million for the quarter and 4.6% to $1.1 billion for the year to date. The company declined to disclose its same-store sales comparisons.
Results reflect the company's 149 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia; Weis Food Service, a restaurant and institutional supplier, and 10 units of Superpetz in Ohio, Georgia and South Carolina.
During the quarter Weis acquired six stores in eastern Pennsylvania from King's Supermarkets, Hamburg, Pa. It continues to operate those stores with the existing management team.
The King's stores are being serviced by Weis facilities here and in Milton, Pa., "[and] both buying and operational efficiencies are quickly being realized at the King's operation," Weis said.
Superpetz, a subsidiary of which Weis owns 80%, acquired five pet supply stores in Georgia and South Carolina from Pet Owners Warehouse, Augusta, Ga., during the quarter, "[and] stronger buying power was quickly realized from the doubling in size of the Superpetz operation. Other economies of scale are now being considered," the company said.
Weis opened one new store during the quarter and had construction in progress on four new stores. Major remodels of eight units were in various stages of completion, with six slated to include store expansions.
