SUNBURY, Pa. -- Healthy foods usually aren't top-of-mind during the holidays, but Weis Markets here is helping shoppers easily include them in festive recipes for everything from hors d'oeuvres to desserts.

It's all part of "HealthyBites," a new in-store initiative aimed at providing nutrition and wellness information to Weis customers. An integral part of the program is new HealthyBites in-store displays, which feature a rotating group of products from Center Store and the perishables department. All three Weis banners -- Weis Markets, Mr. Z's and King's -- are using the displays.

"HealthyBites is designed to highlight the options found in a Weis Markets store, and how a wide range of products can fit into a healthy lifestyle," Karen Buch, registered dietitian for Weis, told SN.

A store-level source told SN that the HealthyBites display is located near the retailer's salad bar.

Along with the in-store displays, the program includes a HealthyBites section in the retailer's circular every other week; and a free, 10-page newsletter published every other month. The newsletter is available in-store, and also online at www.weis.com. The publication is filled with product news, recipes and articles.

For the holidays and the Super Bowl season, the displays and newsletter are showcasing ingredients that can be combined to make healthy snacks. These include reduced-fat nachos, which can be made with ingredients such as Tostitos corn chips, ground turkey breast and light cheddar cheese.

Two weeks ago, the display contained items for healthy desserts, including McCormick brown sugar and vanilla extract, and Jiff peanut butter, according to the store-level source.
