DAVIS, Calif. -- SN visited State Market here, one of two supermarkets in the country selling Calgene's Flavr Savr tomato, to see what shoppers think about the new produce item. Shoppers were asked if they would buy the tomato on regular shopping trips. JIM CORNERS, CHICO: "Sure. You bet. It's a good product. It's like right off the vine. LUCILLE LEVITT, DAVIS: "It truly tastes like a tomato, and it looks gorgeous. But the price is kind of steep. Until the price comes down a little bit I would only buy it occasionally for special treats and for company."

STEPHEN GRABOWSKI, DAVIS: "They're a little expensive right now, but the price will eventually come down. Yeah, eventually I'll probably be buying these on a regular basis. Quite frankly, though, I think there are better uses for genetic engineering."
