JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores here said last week it is considering converting some or all of its Atlanta-area stores to the Save Rite Grocery Warehouse format, with a move possible early next year.

make good candidates for the price-impact format.

"We're not satisfied with our market share there, and we would like to do what we can to increase that share," Mickey Clerc, a chain spokesman, told SN. Although Winn-Dixie also contemplates testing the format in areas besides Atlanta, "Atlanta seems to be a market where this concept could work," he said.

"Save Rite is a format that's been good for us in certain locations, and we're anxious to give it a try in other locations."

Winn-Dixie operates 11 price-impact stores -- one here and two in Orlando under the Save Rite name and eight in Mississippi that operated under the Sack & Save banner. Winn-Dixie picked up the Mississippi locations when it acquired Jackson, Miss.-based Jitney Jungle Stores of America two years ago.

Clerc told SN a decision on how to proceed in Atlanta could be made before the end of the year, but implementation would be unlikely before sometime next year.

He declined to pinpoint whether the company is contemplating converting all stores in the market or just selected locations. "At this point we're just looking at selected locations that could be converted," he said.
