WINN-DIXIE SALES UP, PROFIT DOWN IN QUARTER

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores here said last week that sales rose and net income and same-store sales declined for the third quarter and 40 weeks ended March 31.

r the 40 weeks, while average store sales were up 1.5% for the quarter and 3.4% for the 40-week period.

Net income fell 3.5% to $58.8 million for the quarter and 23.4% to $125.7 million for the year to date. According to James Kufeldt, president, "We remain committed to grow our sales through improved store operations, and earnings as a percent of sales have continued to strengthen as we begin to see results from the implementation of planned changes in operational efficiencies and cost controls. These changes should continue to help reduce our operating and administrative expenses as we progress through the next fiscal year."

The company also announced that two executives have been named vice presidents: Joseph T. White, 51, president of the company's Atlanta division, and Charles W. Doolittle Jr., 47, director of security.
