Rule May Require Nutrition Labels on Alcoholic Beverages

WASHINGTON — A rule that would require alcoholic drink labels to bear information relating to alcohol content, serving size and nutrition, is being considered by the Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, according to the Associated Press. The department will collect comments on the proposed rule — which was scheduled to be published yesterday — through Oct. 29, according to the AP. Although liquor and wine labels must currently include percentage of alcohol by volume, that information is not allowed on beer labels except in states that require it. Percent of alcohol by volume and calorie content must also be identified on beers that are labeled “light.”
