Kroger Promotes White Bread as Memory Builder

Beginning today, Kroger consumers who shop the bread aisle will be met with stanchion signs bearing the message “Bread. It’s essential for your memory.”

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Beginning today, Kroger consumers who shop the bread aisle will be met with stanchion signs bearing the message “Bread. It’s essential for your memory.” The retailer’s efforts are part of the Grain Foods Foundation’s campaign to promote consumption of white bread as a source of folic acid, which has been linked to improved memory function. The signs will appear in Kroger’s 2,500 locations through December, while floor decals bearing the same message will be featured during the month of October. Although Kroger is the only retail supporter of the ad campaign, GFF promotional materials will appear in October issues of American Baby, Better Homes & Gardens, Family Circle, Fitness and Parents Magazine. A smart-snacking recipe contest will also be linked to the campaign during October. “Last year during this time frame, the Grain Foods Foundation launched its America’s Healthy Sandwich Showdown campaign, which was promoted through stanchion signs and floor decals at Kroger,” said GFF spokeswoman Kristen Patterson. “As a result, commercial bread sales increased by 6.2% and unit sales increased by 1.7% over the previous year.”
