LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets here announced a plan yesterday to expand generator placement in all Florida locations where “reasonable and practical.” In March 2006, the retailer announced plans to install 400 stationary and mobile generators at hurricane-prone store locations as well as 175 quick-connecting docking stations at stores in lower-probability hurricane areas, with an expected investment of $100 million. The expansion of the program to protect all Florida stores is projected to cost an additional $75 million. To date, 352 generator permits have been filed, 303 permits have been approved and 269 generators have been installed. Including the expansion, 320 permits will be filed. “Our business recovery plans and generator installs are not meant to replace our culture of preparedness,” Publix spokeswoman Maria Brous said in a statement. “We continue to work with and rely on the local municipalities and county government offices to expedite our efforts in the permitting process.”
