LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets plans to introduce its first formal coupon policy.

Though Publix is not releasing details of the forthcoming policy or when it will launch, coupon users may be in store for stricter redemption requirements.

“Without a policy, we are very lenient, and stores varied in the coupons they accepted,” said chain spokeswoman Maria Brous. “This is the inconsistency that our customers were asking us to address.”

Brous said the policy has nothing to do with the new “Extreme Couponing” reality show on TLC.

But Bud Miller, executive director of the Coupon Information Corp., an Alexandria, Va.-based organization that fights coupon fraud, anticipates that “Extreme Couponing” may motivate retailers and manufacturers to reevaluate their coupon policies.

To help in the effort, the CIC plans to release new voluntary best coupon practices within the next few weeks.
