ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bengal Shrimp with a Sugar Cane Skewer and Chicken Tandoori Star are two new Wegmans brand frozen hors d'oeuvres replacing six of the least popular varieties introduced as part of a 26-item line last year.

“A sweet and spicy Thai marinade flavors the shrimp, but most striking is the skewer, perfect for holding while you nibble and chew (but please don't swallow the sugar cane),” said Mary Ellen Burris in a recent column. Chicken Tandoori Star is an Indian-seasoned chicken in a filling wrapped in fillo dough.

Both Chicken Tandoor Star, 9-count and Bengal Shrimp, 6-count, are $9.99.

Wegmans began sourcing the frozen foods from Good Wives — a company that distributed exclusively to hotels and casinos before Wegmans became its first store-brand customer in 2008. Other varieties include New England Lobster Pot Pie, 9-count, $14.99; Spinach & Artichoke Tortilla Crisps, 9-count, $6.99; and Mini Gorgonzola & Fig Fillo Flowers, 12-count, $9.99. An Entertainment Collection, 24-count assortment, retails for $14.99.

“These are not inexpensive, but they're hand-crafted so all you do is pop them in the oven and impress your guests,” Burris said.

The varieties come as specialty frozens gain popularity.

“We're going to see much more growth in natural and organic in the frozen sector,” said Kim Greenfeld, a consultant with Campo Verde Solutions.
