One person was killed and five others were injured on Wednesday when a crane fell onto an Aldi discount supermarket in the city of Bad Homburg, some 20 km (12.4 miles) north of Frankfurt am Main, police said.

At least two people were critically injured, a police spokesman said. He added that it was unlikely that others were still trapped under the collapsed roof of the building.

The reasons for the crane falling were still unclear, as was the identity of the victims.

The city council said the supermarket was in severe danger of collapsing further, which had made rescue work more difficult.
