USDA Axes Ag Reports Due to Sequester

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced this week its National Agricultural Statistics Service would suspend certain reports for this fiscal year as a result of budget cuts associated with sequestration.

The agency chose to axe reports and forecasts for milk production, catfish and trout, potato stocks, rice stocks, hops, mink, and winter peas, chickpeas, dry peas and lentils, as well as all non-citrus fruit, nut and vegetable forecasts and estimates and the July cattle report.

“The decision to suspend these reports was not made lightly, but it was nevertheless necessary, given the funding situation,” the USDA said in its announcement.

WHY are we wasting money on forecasts for mink, winter peas, chickpeas, dry peas and lentils? Are mink big consumer items? The last time I had mink & chickpeas for supper was . . . NEVER!
