A national survey of more than 2,000 grocery shoppers showed Hy-Vee of West Des Moines, Iowa, to be the overall favorite. WD Partners asked survey respondents to rank the in-store experience, product offering, service and other attributes at the one or two stores where they most frequently shopped. The survey — called the 2012 Supermarket Showdown — was limited to customers of 12 large chains: Food Lion, Giant Eagle, Giant Food, H-E-B, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Meijer, Publix, Safeway, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Whole Foods. Hy-Vee came out on top in both the in-store experience and customer service, while Whole Foods topped the list for community service and product offering, and tied for first with Publix on store navigation. A second aspect of the survey sought to assess shoppers’ use of digital technology in the store, and ranked each banner according to their “digital opportunity” — reflecting the relative desire by their shoppers for digital solutions.
