Giant Food of Landover, Md., and ShopRite, Keasbey, N.J., rank as consumers’ favorite supermarkets, according to a national survey by Market Force Information, Boulder, Colo. In the survey of 6,400 consumers, conducted in March, eight different supermarket chains each tallied at least 2% of the vote, led by Wal-Mart Stores, Kroger Co. and Publix Super Markets. When adjusted for store count, however, Giant and ShopRite rose to the top, followed by Wal-Mart. To determine which store was their favorite, the respondents were asked where they spend most of the grocery dollars. Publix was a clear winner in many of the specific attributes respondents were polled about, however. It indexed the highest in having high-quality produce, courteous staff, fast checkout, natural and/or organic choices, accurate pricing and tags, nutritional or health information, cleanliness and inviting atmosphere. Aldi led in having low prices, followed by Wal-Mart.
