CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores here last week said it has promoted Ron Bagley to director of compact formats. He most recently was director of operations merchandising. In his new role, he will lead compact format development and will report to Steve Lamontagne, vice president of format development. Earlier this year Giant-Carlisle, a division of Amsterdam-based Ahold, opened its first small-format convenience store, a 4,222-square-foot test concept dubbed Giant to Go. Bagley has been with Giant since 1983.

D'AGOSTINO REELECTED AS FIA CHAIR

ALBANY, N.Y. — Nicholas D'Agostino III, president and chief operating officer of D'Agostino Supermarkets, Larchmont, N.Y., was reelected as chairman of the Food Industry Alliance of New York State's board of directors. He was first elected to the post in 2007 to fill an unexpired term, and then was reelected for the yearly post in 2008. He is the fourth D'Agostino — and the third generation of D'Agostinos — to chair FIA, and will have served the longest consecutive tenure as chairman at the completion of his current term next year. Jim Rogers, president of FIA, said D'Agostino has provided a “steady hand” in a “tumultuous time.”

BJ'S NAMES SCHLESINGER TO BOARD

NATICK, Mass. — BJ's Wholesale Club here has announced the election of Leonard A. Schlesinger to its board of directors. Schlesinger is the president of Babson College and is a former board member and executive with Limited Brands, where as chief operating officer he was responsible for overseeing Express, Limited Stores, Victoria's Secret Beauty, Bath and Body Works, and other specialty retailers. Previously, Schlesinger was COO and a director of the quick-service restaurant chain Au Bon Pain.
