Hy-Vee's Jurgens to Retire

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Ric Jurgens, chairman and chief executive officer of Hy-Vee here, said Wednesday he plans to retire on June 1, 2012.

Jurgens, who made the annoucement at the company's annual meeting, said he will ask the company's board to elect Randy Edeker to succeed him. Edeker, 49, is president and chief operating officer.

Jurgens, 62, has been with Hy-Vee for 42 years, working his way up from store director to regional manager to president of the perishables subsidiary in 1986. He was named senior vice president and chief administrative officer in 1995; president in 2001; CEO in 2003; and chairman in 2006.

"We have a skilled management group in place to help propel Hy-Vee to even greater heights," Jurgens told shareholders, "so I will leave this summer with a great deal of confidence in the future of the company."

Hy-Vee, which is owned by its employees, operates 235 retail stores in eight Midwestern states.
