Unified Grocers, Los Angeles, said Tuesday Grant Lunde is joining the member-owned cooperative as manager of retail digital marketing and shopper engagement, a new position.

Lunde, formerly director of marketing for C&K Market, Brookings, Ore., will be responsible for helping independent grocers harness the digital channel.

The company also said it will begin deploying technology from the inMarket Mobile to Mortar beacon platform in select member stores in California and Washington later this month.

M2M enables mobile apps that run on both iOS and Android devices to detect signals from beacons in shoppers’ immediate area, which transmit a variety of information to enhance the shopper’s in-store experience, including coupons, loyalty rewards and grocery-list reminders.

According to Sue Klug, SVP and CMO for Unified, “It’s a win-win. Shoppers benefit from information and deals sent to their mobile devices, and retailers have an effective way to increase sales.”
